The Power of Reading
In English, our learning focus will be based on book 1 of The Spiderwick Chronolicles in which Mallory, Simon and Jared get acquainted with their new home but find many unexpected things. We will use this story to progress in our reading and writing skills, in addition to supporting our learning in the foundation subjects - see our Summer 1 overview to find out more!
Consistent and thoughtful reading has proven to ensure great progress across the curriculum. As a result, we encourage children in year 3 to read to an adult every night for 20 minutes. Use previous knowledge of phoneme-grapheme correspondences to sight read and context clues to support word reading and fluency. Use Bloom's questioning (left) during and after reading to improve comprehension skills.
Remember to put your name in the reading raffle after you have read at home! You will be in with the chance of winning a prize!
We are now practising some of the spellings from the year 3 and 4 spelling list (right). If you take the time to learn some of these at home you will definitely become a SUPER SPELLER!
Children will be sent home with 6 spellings each week to practise and will be tested on 8 words. The 7th will be a mystery word with the same spelling pattern and the 8th will be a word they have learnt before. Rewards will be given to those children who show and prove to Miss Smith they have learnt their spellings at home.
Spellings will be given every Monday, ready for a spelling quiz every Friday.
