In Early Years the children learnt how to print (unjoined letters). In Year 1 we are learning pre-cursive handwriting. This writing is the transition between printing letters and joining letters (cursive handwriting).
In pre-cursive handwriting children practise starting on the line to lead in and lead out. This ensures the letters start at the correct place for writing to be joined, which they will learn in Year 2.
We practise sitting correctly and holding the pencil with a comfortable grip.
We say simple sentences with an action for the capital letter and an action for the full stop. The children are encouraged to sound out words and to use common words they have learnt. Our class book each term is the stimulus for our writing. A variety of writing genres are taught, including stories, instructions, information and poetry.
